Soccer Falls at Colorado, 5-1

BOULDER, Colorado (8/22/24) – The University of Wyoming soccer team dropped its first game of the season Thursday night. The Cowgirls fell to Colorado, 5-1, at Prentup Field.

The loss drops Wyoming to 0-1-1 on the season. The Buffaloes improve to 2-1-0 on the year.

Alyssa Bedard netted the Cowgirls’ first goal of the 2024 season. She was fouled in the box during the 83rd minute, and took advantage of the penalty kick, which cut the Buffaloes’ lead to 4-1.

Colorado scored its first goal of the contest – and the first allowed by Wyoming goalkeeper, Haley Bartel this season – during the eighth minute. Hope Leyba found the back of the net unassisted.

Shyra James doubled up the Buffaloes’ advantage in the 59th minute. She cashed in on a penalty kick due to a Cowgirl handball in the box.

James netted her second score of the contest during the 65th minute. She completed the hat trick in the 70th minute, scoring off a pass from Emerson Layne.

Lola Stanley gave the game its final tally. She scored off a feed from Sami Fisher in the 88th minute.

The Cowgirls created effective offensive pressure throughout the game. They finished with 20 shots, 12 of which were on frame.

Five players logged multiple shots for Wyoming. Bedard led the way with six shots, while Raegan Richardson and Maddi Chance had three apiece.

Leyba boasted the most shots for Colorado with six. As a team, the Buffaloes registered 18 shots, 10 of which were on target.

Bartel ended with five saves for the Cowgirls. Colorado starting goalkeeper Jordan Nytes, made eight saves in her 69 minutes of game action.

Wyoming returns to Laramie for its home opener Sunday. The Cowgirls host South Dakota State at 12 p.m. at the Madrid Sports Complex.
