Sleeping Giant Ski Area on the market
CODY (WNE) — Years of struggling to keep the Sleeping Giant Ski Area open have led to its facilities being put up for sale.
Sleeping Giant is listed with 307 Realty for an asking price of $500,000. The price covers the structures and ski infrastructure on the property that’s leased from the Shoshone National Forest on the North Fork outside the East Entrance to Yellowstone National Park.
Despite the addition of a zipline and other amenities, the resort hasn’t been open for two years.
“We have always put community first when thinking about Sleeping Giant, and we will continue to do so through this process,” owner Nick Piazza said. “We are taking pause this year to reflect on our different options.”
In recent years, the ski area has struggled with lack of snow and recruiting staff.
“There have been some people who have questioned our stewardship, so I think it makes sense to see what’s out there,” Piazza said. “The cost of leadership is responsibility and we take responsibility for the things we do.”
Community must continue to drive the operation, he continued.
“If somebody wants to come and take it off our hands for the right price, we’ll definitely agree,” Piazza added. “But whoever comes in would have to keep a community focus around the mountain by continuing, for example, school programs, which are things Sleeping Giant has (always) traditionally done.”
The area, to become viable, requires more improvements.
“For Sleeping Giant to have long term success, it needs more development,” Piazza said. “We are looking to find a strategic partner to further develop Sleeping Giant. I think 307 Realty has come up with a pretty good strategy (regarding marketing Sleeping Giant for a selling price of $500,000).”
Piazza bought the ski area for less than $100 in 2020, according to past Enterprise stories.
