With spring sporting events cancelled, and the schools closed due to COVID-19 restrictions, the News Letter Journal staff has been missing out on taking photographs of Weston County youth in classrooms and at sporting events. As such, students are not being featured in the newspaper as much as they were before the pandemic.
But you can help.
How? NLJ is encouraging the public to send photos of youth doing their schoolwork from home or staying in shape for when school sports resume, presumably in the fall. For area home-schoolers, working from home is not unusual and NLJ would like to share your ‘classroom’ as well. Working on a science experiment? Send in a photograph! Reading with mom or dad? Send in a photograph!
When submitting pictures, please include the name of the child (and anyone else in the photo), and a brief description of what they are doing.
“We miss sharing photos of our community’s youth, and would love to continue the News Letter Journal’s long tradition of highlighting the achievements of our younger generations,” said Kim Dean, NLJ managing editor. All submissions can be sent to design@newslj.com
Additionally, NLJ is currently preparing for publication of the annual Grad Tab, featuring each of the graduates as they share their memories and plans for the future. Any graduate who has not yet sent in their questionnaire can email it to design@newslj.com. NLJ welcomes home-schooling graduates to be featured in the Grad Tab as well, so if you haven’t received a questionnaire send your request to this email as well. Deadline for returning the questionnaires is April 30.
“We love to feature our seniors in the pages of the News Letter Journal,” said Dean. “This year has been a hard hit on our graduating class, and we feel that celebrating the accomplishments and academic achievements of our seniors is a small way to bring a little bit of acclaim for all the hard work they’ve done over the years.”
The News Letter Journal always welcomes submitted photos of events from the community to share in its pages. The paper also publishes wedding announcements, birth announcements, generational photographs and obituaries, and is one the few publications that continues to do this at no charge.
“Your local newspaper is not only a way to share the day-to-day life of our great community with each other, but also an archive of our history for future generations,” Dean said.
