School district, police investigating sexually explicit materials at Douglas school
DOUGLAS (WNE) — Converse County School District #1 and the Douglas Police Department are conducting an active investigation “involving the distribution of sexually explicit material involving minors.”
The students involved are of middle school age and, while police and school officials declined to release any details, Douglas Middle School parents and others have expressed their dismay and anger about what some described as photos of students being passed among themselves and, perhaps inadvertently, to adults.
Because of the nature of the investigation, Superintendent of Schools Ryan Mackey said he cannot release details to protect the privacy of students.
However, the superintendent said, “ I am grateful to live and work in a supportive community that works together to maximize the safety of our kids.”
Mackey and the Douglas Police Department issued an alert to parents Thursday, three days after the images first surfaced and were reported to authorities, according to parents.
Some parents criticized the three-day delay on social media.
CCSD1 and police urged parents to check their children’s cellphones and go through messaging apps and social media accounts for any inappropriate images or videos involving minors. If parents find any material, they should contact the Douglas Police Department.
“Do not share or forward the material,” the alert stated. “Our shared goal is to protect the safety, dignity and well-being of all students. Situations like this can also serve as an important opportunity to talk with young people about responsible digital behavior, online safety and the serious consequences of sharing inappropriate content.”
Parents with any information can contact Douglas police at 307-358-3311 or Mackey at 307-358-2942.
