The Root of Corruption

By
Dean Butler

Corruption is not hidden anymore. It is in every part of life—governments, schools, businesses, and even homes. The more people chase after power, money, and control, the darker the world becomes. Many know it is happening, yet they look the other way. Some are the ones voting these same leaders back into power, blind to the evil right in front of them.

The Bible tells us why. John wrote, “In Him was life, and the life was the Light of mankind. And the Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not grasp it.” (John 1:4–5) Darkness means sin, and those who love sin will never grasp the Light. The corruption we see today is not just bad politics—it is proof of people choosing sin over God.

Romans warns us, “Even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their reasonings, and their senseless hearts were darkened.” (Romans 1:21) Paul also said, “In the last days difficult times will come. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, slanderers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy.” (2 Timothy 3:1–2) That sounds like the nightly news. Isaiah declared, “Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness.” (Isaiah 5:20)

This is the root of corruption. It is not only in leaders who cheat and lie. It is in the people who excuse it, ignore it, and defend it. Leaders reflect the hearts of those who elect them. If a people love darkness, they will gladly put corrupt men and women in charge.

The truth is simple: corruption flows from sin. The human heart apart from God is evil, and no law, system, or reform can change that. But there is hope. John said the Light still shines, and the darkness cannot overcome it. The Light is Christ, and only He can expose sin, forgive it, and change the heart.

The world will not heal itself. The corruption will not go away on its own. The answer is repentance. Leaders and citizens alike must turn back to God, or else the darkness will grow until it consumes everything. The choice is clear—keep living in the dark, or come to the Light.

People of Weston County, are you content with corruption? How long will you excuse it, how long will you call it normal? When is enough, enough? If no one stands against the darkness, then the darkness will soon take complete control. Now is the time to see evil for what it is, to turn back to God, and to stand in the Light before it is too late.
