Rock Springs Social Security office expected to close in June

CASPER (WNE) — The Rock Springs Social Security office is expected to close in June, leaving thousands of Wyoming residents in the Southwest portion of the state without a local social security office, according to reporting by the Associated Press.
The expected closure of the office stems from actions taken by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency as part of the Trump administration’s effort to shrink the size of government, according to the AP.
The expected closure comes days after the Social Security Administration announced it would be tightening rules around identity verification for benefit claims and direct deposit changes, in an effort to enhance security and prevent fraud.
Identity verification, starting March 31, will need to take place online or in person and verification will no longer be able to be completed over the phone.
More than one in five Wyoming residents — 118,420 people — receives Social Security benefits, according to 2022 data provided by AARP.
The state is home to six offices around the state — Casper, Cheyenne, Cody, Riverton, Rock Springs and Sheridan — but only the Rock Springs location was on a list of 47 Social Security Administration offices listed for closure.
“Right now, we’re hearing from thousands of older Americans confused and concerned about their Social Security payments, the status of Social Security field offices, and long wait times on the phone to get their questions answered,” Wyoming AARP Associate State Director Tom Lacock said.
The Social Security Administration in February announced that it would be cutting its workforce from roughly 57,000 to 50,000.
