ROCK SPRINGS (WNE)  — Local residents have expressed concerns over bat sightings recently. Rock Springs Animal Control has received an unusually high number of calls involving bats this week.

Reports include bats displaying unusual behavior such as lying on the ground in the middle of the day. According to the Rock Springs Police Department, this is concerning behavior and should be reported immediately to Animal Control if observed.

Bats play an important role in our environment, but they are also a known carrier for rabies which can be spread to humans through scratches or bites.

Due to the small size of the bats in Wyoming, it is often difficult for people to tell if a bat has scratched or bitten them.

Those who find a bat in their home should not try to capture it but instead call Animal Control. If they have direct contact with a bat, they should seek medical attention.
