Remembering the fallen

By

“History has taught us over and over again that freedom is not free. When push comes to shove, the ultimate protectors of freedom and liberty are the brave men and women in our armed forces. Throughout our history, they’ve answered the call in bravery and sacrifice.” ---Tim Pawlenty

Monday is Memorial Day, the day to honor our veterans who rest in cemeteries across this nation, and it is important to also to honor and remember the men and women who currently serve and sacrifice for us each and every day.
Cemeteries will also be full of family members who choose to remember and decorate the graves of loved ones who have passed on before them. This tradition of love and respect is carefully being passed on from one generation to the next.
Communities across America will be holding services and events over the weekend, and VFW Post #2516 Commander Christopher W. Rhodes has announced and invited the public to all of their planned events.
On Friday, May 24, a cookout with burgers and hot dogs will be held at 6 p.m. at the Newcastle VFW Hall. Mark you calendars for Sunday, May 26, when the flag placement for veterans’ graves will take place at 1 p.m. in the Newcastle Greenwood Cemetery, and Commander Rhodes stated public volunteers are welcome and needed for this event.
The VFW and the American Legion members are teaming up for their Memorial Day Service on Monday, May 27, at 10 a.m. in Newcastle Greenwood Cemetery. The public is encouraged to attend the service, which will last around 30 minutes.
I encourage you to take part in these Memorial Day events, and to remember each and every day “that freedom is not free.”
