The reason for the season
As we prepare to celebrate Christmas, we at the News Letter Journal wanted to do something different this year — something meaningful. With our publication date falling on Dec. 25, we saw a rare and powerful opportunity to remind our readers, our neighbors and our community of the true reason for the season.
Too often, we hear the refrain that the meaning of Christmas has been lost beneath the weight of commercialism, busyness and distraction. While gift-giving, family traditions and festive gatherings all have their place, they are not the foundation of this holiday. The foundation is Jesus Christ — the birth of our Lord and Savior.
This week’s front-page story is a special one. Crafted in the style of a news account from Bethlehem more than 2,000 years ago, it is our attempt to recenter the narrative on the miraculous event that gave Christmas its name and purpose: the birth of Christ. We offer this story not as fiction, but as a reimagined account meant to draw us closer to the miracle itself and ground us in its eternal significance.
At its heart, Christmas is a celebration of hope, peace and divine love. As our community stands at the threshold of a new year, we believe there is no better moment to anchor our hearts in those values. A community rooted in the life and lessons of Jesus Christ is a community that lifts one another up, offers grace, extends kindness and shines a light for others to follow.
That is the kind of community we hope to foster. That is the vision we hold for our town and our world. And that is why we have dedicated this edition of the News Letter Journal to celebrating not just a holiday, but the Savior who gave it meaning.
