Box Elder, S.D. — The Black Hills Defense and Industry Symposium is coming to The  Box Elder Events Center, April 9-10, 2025. This annual event will bring leaders of  academia, research, industry, the military, the federal government, and the Black  Hills community together for meaningful dialogue highlighting the importance of collaborative relations in western South Dakota. Leaders will discuss how attendees can contribute to solutions for stronger national defense and bolstered regional economic development.

The 2025 Symposium will feature high-level discussions and breakout sessions regarding critical minerals, doing business with the government, military family quality of life, and resilience & reliability.All Black Hills residents are encouraged to register and attend. 

Day 1 (April 9) will include general sessions featuring state of the base updates from Ellsworth Air Force Base leadership, B-21 Raider program updates from Northrop Grumman, and Department of Homeland Security updates.
Breakout sessions will include:

  • Energy Infrastructure
  • The Link Between Family Quality of Life & Force Readiness
  • Cyber Security
  • PFOS/PFOA
  • Doing Business with the Government
  • Mining, Critical Minerals, and Munitions
  • Intersection of National Security & Foreign Trade
  • Posturing Small Businesses for Small Business Innovation Contracts

Day 2 (April 10) will feature a general session focused on the ever-increasing cyber threat, presented by the former Commander of the 16th Air Force (AF Cyber, Joint Force HQ Cyber).
Breakout sessions will include:

  • Creating Military Friendly Communities
  • Local Crisis Response
  • The Threat of Drones and Mitigation TTPs
