Poor People in a rich country?
Poor People in a rich country?
Dear Editor,
A recent column by Walter Williams extols the virtues of capitalism while decrying socialism.
We don’t have enough room on this page to enter that discussion. But, there are a couple of elements of his argument that beg to be examined more closely: He attributes the rise of Hitler to the use of his National-Sozialist (Nazi) Party. WRONG!
The inhumane devastation inflicted on the German civilians after World War 1 by the victorious Allies was their primary motivation to follow/obey Hitler.
Capitalism, he notes correctly, was relatively new and promised to amass great wealth. Absolutely true for the few, not the many.
He mistakes that the pursuit of profits is seen as evil whereas it is the inequitable sharing of profits along with unsuitable working conditions that make the working man think about a strike!
Most capitalists pay for maintenance and repairs on their equipment but balk at paying for maintenance and repairs on their workers. Go figure! Many successful capitalists take their excess untaxed profits away, overseas thus stripping the American economy of possible growth or even infrastructure maintenance and repairs.
Is this why we have so many poor, homeless and diseased people in such a rich country?
