PATRICIA ANN HAGLUND
Nov. 23, 1939–Sept. 14, 2025
With great sadness, we announce the passing of Patricia Ann Haglund, who died on Sept. 14, 2025, at the age of 85.
Patricia was born to Clarence and Marjorie Cotton on Nov. 23, 1939, in Newcastle, Wyoming. Patricia was the oldest of three children and was raised on a ranch in Weston County. She attended a country school for her early school years, then transferred to Newcastle High School where she graduated in 1958.
After high school, Patricia attended the University of Wyoming where she obtained a bachelor’s degree in secondary education. She also had a love for music and was in their marching band, where she played the flute.
While attending the University of Wyoming, she met the love of her life, Richard DeVern Haglund, while working at the radio station in Laramie, Wyoming. They later married on Oct. 22, 1960. To this union, two children were born, Sherry and Richard Jr.
After graduation, Patricia and Richard moved to Moorcroft, Wyoming, to begin their teaching career where Patricia became a business teacher at Moorcroft High School and taught there for more than 30 years.
Along with teaching, Patricia was the Moorcroft High School cheer leading coach, was involved with student council, and taught adult education classes in the evenings.
After retiring from Moorcroft High School, she and her husband Richard moved to Newcastle. Patricia missed the classroom, so she decided to become a substitute teacher in Newcastle. She loved being a substitute and did that for several years before fully retiring in 2013. If you couldn’t find Patricia in a classroom, you could find her on her ranch. She really enjoyed working on it with all her cows and horses. Patricia absolutely loved her family and doing everything with them. They were her pride and joy.
Patricia was very active in church and was a member of the Southern Baptist Church. She often played the piano for them during services.
Patricia is survived by her two children, Sherry Garhart (Kevin) of Newcastle; Richard Haglund Jr. (Christian) of Laramie; three grandchildren, Tracy Leonard (John) of Newcastle, Austin Gutierrez (Tyler) of Artesia, New Mexico, and Abby Haglund of Laramie; 10 great-grandchildren, Carson, Ashlyn, Payton, and Owen of Newcastle, Quoy, Kahli, Gunnar Rose, Jocelyn, Skylar, and Harper, of Artesia, New Mexico; one sister, Sandy Wasmuth of Laramie; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was proceeded in death by her parents, Clarence and Marjorie Cotton; husband, Richard Haglund; grandson, Jason Garhart; and brother, James Cotton.
Funeral services for Patricia will be held Saturday, Sept. 20, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Newcastle.
Condolences may be sent to the family in care of Meridian Mortuary, 111 S. Railway Ave., Newcastle, WY, 82701 or expressions of sympathy may also be made online at meridianmortuary.com.
