The Party in Hell Was Cut Short

Satan thought he had won when Jesus died, but the resurrection shattered his short-lived celebration. This post reminds us of the victory we have through Christ.
They watched Him die.
From the ground below, the crowd slowly scattered. From the spiritual realm, I imagine a different scene entirely. I can almost hear the laughter echoing through the darkness. Satan thought he had won.
He had waited for this. Planned for it. Tried everything to stop the plan of God from unfolding. But when Jesus cried out, “It is finished,” and gave up His spirit, Satan may have taken that as a victory shout.
Can’t you just see him? Leaping around, proud of what he thought he had accomplished? The Son of God… dead. The Light of the world… snuffed out. The disciples were afraid, hiding. The followers of Jesus were heartbroken. Everything had gone dark—literally and spiritually.
But here’s the thing… Satan misunderstood the plan.
Jesus wasn’t defeated—He was completing the mission.
“For Christ also died for sins once for all time, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God…” (1 Peter 3:18)
While Satan was partying, Heaven was preparing for a miracle.
Three days later, the tomb was empty. The stone was rolled away. Jesus wasn’t dead anymore. He was alive.
The celebration in hell was cut short. The roaring turned to silence. And I think Satan realized in that moment—he hadn’t won anything at all.
In fact, he’d just watched his own defeat unfold.
“And having disarmed the rulers and authorities, He made a public display of them, having triumphed over them through Him.” (Colossians 2:15)
So what does that mean for us?
It means even when life feels dark… even when it looks like evil is winning… God is still working. The enemy may roar for a moment, but he doesn’t get the final word.
Jesus does.
And He’s alive.
“But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians 15:57)
