ORDINANCE NO. 6, 2026 — City of Newcastle

AN ORDINANCE AMENDING SECTION 11-1, ESTABLISHMENT AND COMPOSITION OF VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT; APPOINTMENT OF FIRE CHIEF; ELECTION AND TERM OF OTHER OFFICERS AND MEMBERS 

“Sec. 11.1. Establishment and composition of volunteer fire department; appointment of fire chief; election and term of other officers and members.

The Volunteer Fire Department is hereby created and established to consist of fifty (50) members, including a chief, assistant chief, and such other officers as the organization may decide. The chief of the volunteer fire department shall be elected from the membership of the volunteer fire department. The chief of the volunteer fire department may appoint four (4) captains from the membership of the volunteer fire department. The assistant chief of the volunteer fire department shall be elected from the membership of the volunteer fire department.

All other officers shall be elected by the volunteer fire department at an annual election, to be held at the regular meeting of the volunteer fire department in January of each year. Such elected officers shall hold office for one year or until their successors have been elected and qualified. Paid firemen may also be members of the volunteer organization; provided, that they are selected for membership in the same manner as other members. It is further provided that the size of the volunteer fire department may hereafter be changed by resolution of the city council.
