Olson breaks long-standing record

Three Dogies earned an invite to the Wyoming Track Classic, aka The Best of the Best, in Casper on Friday, and Adalyn Olson took advantage of racing against the best competition the state has to offer in the 100 Meter Hurdles to knock off a school record (15.9 seconds) set by Susan Seppala in 1979.
Olson’s previous performance in the 100 Meter Hurdles gave her a spot in the blocks in that event, where she ran a personal best time of 15.69 seconds in her seventh-place finish, which also was a qualifying mark for the state meet. Only one 3A athlete from Douglas finished ahead of Olson.
“Adalyn was just solid through the whole race. She was up against some really heavy hitters, and there were some really fast times,” head coach Matt Conzelman said. “I told all three kids just to step it up and go out and perform, and she really did! It’s pretty awesome that she also set a new school record in the process!”
Sam Cunningham was invited to compete in both the two-mile and the 1600 Meter run, but he opted to compete in the mile due to the two-mile being the first race of the day, and he wanted to be fresh for the shorter race later in the meet.
In his eighth-place finish, Cunningham ran a 4:38.49, just a second off his previous best outdoor time this season. Like Olson, only one 3A athlete finished ahead of him.
“Sam had a good race, and I think he is peaking when we need him to,” Conzelman said. “He went in ninth and finished eighth, so he moved up a spot.”
The highest finish of the day was earned by freshman Landen Hill, who was second in the high jump with a personal best leap of 6 feet, 2 inches, which is also a state qualifying mark. The first-place student athlete, from Lusk, cleared 6 feet, 4 inches.
“A lot of Landen’s competitors went in jumping 6-4, so he barely got in with his 6-1 qualifying jump,” Conzelman said. “I don’t know if those guys had an off day or what, but he and the kid from Lusk ended up in a jump-off, and Landen got his best jump ever at 6-2.”
On Thursday, the full Dogie and Lady Dogie track team traveled to Gillette to compete at Thunder Basin High School. The day was fraught with inclement weather, including a hail storm during the mile run, but Dogies had some impressive performances against the predominantly 4A athletes.
“It was crazy weather and kind of a rugged day, which meant it wasn’t a great (personal record) day for us,” Conzelman said. “But we still had some good things happen.”
Highlights of the day included Jayden Corley’s return to the long jump after suffering a stress fracture in his foot following his very successful performance in the first meet of the season. The senior finished third in the long jump with a personal best leap of 19-11.5.
“He’s been chomping at the bit to be able to compete, but we wanted to take it easy so he didn’t reinjure himself by returning too soon,” Conzelman said. “So, he came back with a vengeance on Thursday, which was great for him.”
Another bright spot on the day was the Dogies going first and second in the high jump, with Hill taking first place, clearing six feet and CJ Hardy finishing second with a jump of 5 feet, 10 inches.
Anika Oleson and Hollie Swentesky both made finals in the triple jump, and Oleson ended up third with a PR jump of 32-09.75.
The Dogies have one remaining regular season meet to try to prequalify for the state meet as they travel to Sundance for a meet there on Friday.
