A new era

Why we’re launching the Unabridged Fund — and what it means for Weston County and beyond

The past decade has taken a heavy toll on local news in America. Newspapers have disappeared. Newsrooms have been gutted. And
countless communities have lost the essential watchdogs that keep them informed and empowered.

That decline has hit rural America the hardest.

But here in Weston County, we have something to be
genuinely grateful for: It hasn’t happened to us. Not because we were spared by chance, but because this community has consistently valued the role an independent press plays in its civic life. Readers, advertisers, local institutions and engaged citizens have kept the News Letter Journal alive and active when so many rural papers collapsed.

That support has allowed us to do more than just hold the line. It has allowed us
to push harder — to investigate deeper, demand transparency, modernize our reporting tools and make the work of government more visible than ever before. This community’s belief in the First Amendment has kept a 135-year mission intact.

That is something worth acknowledging before anything else. And it’s the foundation on which we are building the next step.

This week, we’ve launched the Unabridged Fund, in partnership with the Wyoming Community Foundation. This initiative is not a rescue plan. It is a long-term investment in work that is already strong — an investment designed to ensure that accountability journalism in Weston County grows, adapts and endures.

The fund will support deeper reporting, modern technologies, expanded reach and new ways to tell the real story of this region — not the stereotypes but the lived reality of rural life that deserves to be seen and understood far beyond our borders.

We understand the economic pressures our region faces. We experience them ourselves. But we also know this: A community that has supported its newspaper for 135 years is a community that is ready to build for the future.

Giving Tuesday and the rest of this first week will be our initial milestone. Early donors will set the pace and help shape a fund that protects the work we do and strengthens the voice of Weston County
for generations.

We are grateful for what this community has already made possible. Now we invite those who share this mission to help us continue it — and to help write the next chapter in a story that is worth telling, every single day.

I am truly humbled by all of the support we’ve received.
