JACKSON (WNE) — The Mountain Health Co-Op, which provides health insurance for more than 11,000 people in Wyoming, is set to stop offering plans to people in the Equality State after this year.

The co-op aims to provide affordable health insurance and will continue its operations in Montana and Idaho. Health coverage for Wyomingites will end Dec. 31. The co-op made the decision amid rising costs in Wyoming, according to Jackie Boyle, senior vice president of external affairs.

“Unfortunately, it’s really been a mix of just the market as a whole across the country that is driven by higher-cost health care,” Boyle said. “When we looked at how that was impacting our business, the cost of health care in Wyoming is just disproportionately higher than the other two states.”

More than 9,000 Wyomingites who get health insurance through the Health Insurance Marketplace, created under former President Barack Obama in an effort to make health insurance more affordable, will need to select a different plan later this year.

And shoppers may have only one other option: Blue Cross Blue Shield of Wyoming.

As of 2025, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Wyoming and the Mountain Health Co-Op are the only companies that offer marketplace health insurance plans in Wyoming.

One of Mountain Health Co-Op’s goals when it expanded into the state in 2021 was to compete with the large health insurance company, according to board member Alex Muromcew.

“The year we entered, their rates dropped 12%, which totally validated the point of competition lowers prices for consumers,” Muromcew said. “Without competition, I worry that it’ll be easier for Blue Cross Blue Shield to raise rates even further.”
