Missing hiker presumed dead

RIVERTON (WNE) — The body presumed to be that of a missing hiker has been located on a cliff face below the summit of Gannett Peak, according to the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office.
The deceased individual, according to a press release from Fremont County Undersheriff Mike Hutchison, is presumed to be that of 66-year-old Gary Warner Truman, who was reported overdue by family members after going on a solo expedition in the Gannett Peak area of Dubois on July 9.
The FCSO says recovery of the body has been hampered by both the elevation and strong winds. A group of climbers notified the FCSO on July 20 that they’d spotted the body.
FCSO and Lander Search and Rescue began a search after being contacted by Truman’s family on July 16, indicating he hadn’t returned from his trip.
The FCSO and LSAR have been working with Tip Top Search and Rescue of Sublette County, Teton County Search and Rescue, Dubois Search and Rescue, dog teams, Wind River Backcountry Horse Packers, CWC mountaineering students and NOLS mountaineering students.
After being alerted to the body suspected to be that of Truman on Sunday, search and rescue attempted to locate the deceased individual.
“Rescuers have not been able to access the body (which is presumed to be the missing man) due to the elevation and terrain along with high winds hampering helicopter operations,” the FCSO said in the release. “The body is located at around 13,400 feet on a cliff face below the summit of Gannett Peak. An effort to recover the remains will be attempted as soon as weather allows.”
