CASPER (WNE) — The Mills City Council once again voted in support of a federal bill that would give the city its own long-awaited ZIP code.

The council first expressed support this year in May for the bill that would give the city a unique ZIP code rather than sharing one with part of Casper, but similar efforts have been brought up for years to no avail.

The bill to designate unique ZIP codes for a handful of communities across the United States passed the U.S. House of Representatives earlier this year, but it has sat in the Senate’s Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs since July.

A similar bill passed the House last December but was not taken up by the Senate.

The National ZIP Code Advocacy Coalition is traveling to Washington D.C. to ask the Senate committee to take the bill up for debate, so the resolutions passed by the city council on Tuesday are reiterating support for the change, Juarez said.

The coalition is an informal working group made up of nearly 40 municipalities across the country and founded by the city of Eastvale, California, according to the city’s website.

Mail delivery in Mills has been complicated for as long as it has shared the ZIP code with Casper, Juarez said. Many residents cannot receive deliveries at their home address and must pick up mail and packages from PO boxes at the post office in Mills.

Juarez also indicated that because Mills lacks its own zip code, residents also have trouble receiving hospital and utility bills in a timely manner.

Earlier this year, the Mills post office announced it would no longer help residents find undeliverable mail because it is a burden on its resources, Juarez said.
