Men’s Golf Looks to Continue Strong Play at Gene Miranda Falcon Invite
LARAMIE, Wyoming (9/20/24) – The University of Wyoming men’s golf team has a quick turnaround this week. Just three days removed from the Ram Masters Invite, the Cowboys travel to Colorado Springs, Colorado, for the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational from Saturday-Monday.
“We’ll get some rest, hit recharge and kind of decompress,” head coach Joe Jensen said. “We’ll get some good training in and good preparation. The good thing about the quick turnaround is we get to stay in rhythm.”
The Pokes finished in a tie for 11th as a team in Fort Collins earlier this week. Their best overall day, collectively, was Wednesday, and they’ll look to carry that over into a three-day tournament at the Eisenhower - Blue Course, which is a par 72 and stretches 7,541 yards.
Wyoming participates in this tournament most every year and has done well in recent memory. The Cowboys, as a team, have finished in the top five four of the last five years and two of those times they were runner-up.
“So much with how you play as a player comes with having some experience and having some comfortability on where you’re playing,” Jensen said. “That’s a lot of it. And we like where we are at and what we are doing.”
Wyoming has had two different players lead them through two tournaments. Kristof Panke paced the Pokes at the Palouse Collegiate with a third-place finish, while Patrick Azevedo led the Cowboys at the Ram Masters Invite with a tie for 31st.
The Gene Mirando Falcon Invite is a 54-hole tournament, but unlike most, it’s played over the course of three days with 18 holes of competition each day. Twenty-two teams will be on hand, and that list is comprised of Air Force, Colorado State, CSU Northridge, Denver, Gonzaga, Holy Cross, Incarnate Word, Missouri State, Northern Colorado, San Jose State, SIU Edwardsville, Southern Utah, Tarleton State, UC Davis, UC Riverside, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, Utah State, Utah Tech, Weber State and Wofford.
The tournament begins at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday. Sunday has the same tee off time, while Monday commences at 7:30 a.m.
Following the Gene Miranda Falcon Invite, Wyoming travels to Boulder, Colorado. The Pokes participate in the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational from Sept. 30-Oct. 1.
