LARAMIE, Wyoming (9/9/24) – The University of Wyoming men’s golf team commences its 2024-25 season this week. The Cowboys tee it up at the Palouse Collegiate on Tuesday and Wednesday in a tournament played at the Palouse Ridge Golf Club.

This marks Wyoming’s first-ever trip to the Palouse Collegiate. The Pokes usually start the fall season at the Ram Masters Invite, but with that event falling a tad later on the calendar, head coach Joe Jensen elected to find another tourney to kick off his season.

“I’ve always loved our fall schedule, but the CSU event and Air Force, it all kind of slid a little later in September,” Jensen said. “The coach at Washington State is a great friend of mine. He’s got a really good golf program, their course is a university course, but it’s high end, and I’ve heard really good things about it.”

The course stretches 7,302 yards and is a par 71. It’s a 15-team field consisting of Washington State, Cal State Northridge, Colorado, Gonzaga, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon State, Pacific, Sacramento State, San Jose State, Seattle, UC San Diego, Utah, Utah and Utah Valley.

“All of our events this fall have good solid fields,” Jensen said. “But they’re fields in which I want to be in the conversation of a top finish or a respectable finish.”

It’ll be a homecoming of sorts for a couple Cowboys. Kristof Panke – who returns as the Wyoming golfer with the lowest scoring average last season at 72.28 – and Evan Johnson are both from the Evergreen State.

Patrick Azevedo, Jaren Calkins and Davis Seybert also return after starting the majority of last season. Azevedo owned a 72.78 scoring average, while Calkins and Seybert logged scoring averages of 72.82 and 74.53, respectively.

“I want them to play with confidence, play free and grow into the season,” Jensen said. “I want them to trust their process. I trust this group, so I’m going to have a cautious initial approach.”

Players will complete 36 holes Tuesday beginning at 9 a.m. The tournament concludes Wednesday with 18 holes beginning at 8:45 a.m.

Following the Palouse Collegiate, Wyoming heads to Fort Collins for the Rams Masters Invite from Sept. 17-18.
