Letter carriers organize to ‘Stamp Out Hunger’

CASPER (WNE) — On May 10, letter carriers across the country will pick-up and drop off mail as usual, but they hope to have more than normal to grab.
The National Association of Letter Carriers organizes the largest one-day food drive every year on the second Saturday in May.
The event, aptly named Stamp Out Hunger, asks people to leave non-perishable food items in or next to their mailbox to be collected by their local mail carriers.
Rene Eberhardt, president of the Wyoming Association of Letter Carriers, said Casper collected more than 20,000 pounds of food last year.
She said many food pantries struggle with low supply due to a majority of donations coming around the winter holidays. As summer approaches, more school-aged children will be in need.
“Some people worry that they’re making the letter carriers work too hard, but this is our food drive,” Eberhardt said. “It’s our chance to give back to the community, and we will be delivering postcards and bags in the next two weeks leading up to the food drive.”
Those who do not receive a bag in the mail can place their items in any bag from their home, she said.
Casper-area Girl Scouts and retired carriers will also be helping with the pick-up of items to ease some of the load. Food items can be placed next to a mailbox or neighborhood box units, dropped off at a post office or taken to a local food bank.
Eberhardt said every little bit counts in this endeavor, whether it be one canned good or a whole box of items.
