Laramie County coroner’s annual report shows increase in natural deaths, homicides, suicides
CHEYENNE (WNE) — Laramie County saw a 63% increase in suicides, a 60% increase in homicides and a 2% increase in natural deaths in 2025 compared to 2024, according to the Laramie County Coroner’s annual report.
The office investigated 93% of the 385 reported deaths in the county last year. The report breaks down deaths by manner of death, age of the deceased and several other contributing factors.
“This past year has brought both challenges and progress,” Laramie County Coroner Rebecca Reid wrote in the report. “Every case we handle represents a life, a family, and a story that deserves dignity, compassion, and thorough investigation. Our team remains dedicated to ensuring that every individual entrusted to our care is treated with professionalism and respect, while also providing answers and support to those left behind.”
This includes the 12 unclaimed/indigent deceased individuals the office investigated in 2025, representing a 20% decrease from the prior year.
These are individuals with no next of kin or no one available to arrange their final care. They are buried or cremated at the expense of Laramie County.
Last year presented several opportunities to strengthen operations and expand the office’s capabilities, Reid wrote. The office is progressing toward conducting more autopsies in-house in 2026, which would ensure more timely examinations, reduce costs to the county and lessen the burden on families during already difficult times.
The office has also remained focused on supporting families through grief resources and community outreach, Reid wrote.
“We understand that our role goes beyond investigation, and we are here to help guide individuals through some of the most difficult moments of their lives,” she wrote. “Whether through providing educational opportunities, resource materials, or simply being present with compassion, we strive to serve with humanity and care.”
