Judges, attorneys ask Wyoming senators to oppose Blanche nomination
CHEYENNE (WNE) — A group of 70 Wyoming retired judges and current and retired attorneys has delivered a public letter to U.S. Sens. John Barrasso and Cynthia Lummis urging them to oppose the nomination of Todd Blanche for U.S. attorney general.
The signatories, “Wyoming lawyers and retired judges sworn to uphold the Constitution,” include former chief justices of the Wyoming Supreme Court, several former Wyoming attorneys general, numerous retired district and circuit court judges, and dozens of practicing and retired attorneys from across the state.
The letter highlights Blanche’s conduct as acting attorney general in the Trump v. IRS litigation, which the signatories say involved a collusive settlement resulting in the release of claims against President Donald Trump, his entities and family members, a controversial “anti-weaponization” fund directive, objections from numerous federal judges, and a federal district court order referring Blanche’s conduct to state bar authorities for investigation.
The letter states that “no ethical lawyer worth his salt would be a part of this colossal abuse of our judicial system.”
The letter also cites opposition from more than 1,200 former U.S. Department of Justice employees and a statement from the New York City Bar Association questioning Blanche’s adherence to the rules of professional conduct for lawyers licensed in New York.
“[T]hose who know better than any of us have gone on record to further detail Mr.
Blanche’s lack of leadership qualities and independence,” the letter states, urging the senators and their staff to review the underlying court filings and letters before acting on the nomination.
The signatories ask that, should the senators choose to support the nomination, they publicly explain to their Wyoming constituents how they weighed the factual evidence raised in the letter.
