GILLETTE (WNE) — Campbell County School District was just one of many school districts across the country that was affected by a massive data breach that took place recently.

Tuesday, the Campbell County School District was notified by PowerSchool, the district’s student information system, of a cybersecurity breach that involved unauthorized access to certain staff and student information across the country.

PowerSchool is a cloud-based education software that serves more than 75% of K-12 students in North America, according to its website.

CCSD’s technology department conducted an audit and found that information for current and former school district staff, students and guardians was accessed, according to a press release from the district.

No students, current or former, had their academic records accessed. The district noted that the breach was “not an internal systems failure.”

While the district doesn’t store social security numbers in PowerSchool, there were four employees whose social security numbers were accessed.

Administrators from Wyoming school districts that were affected are working with the state Department of Education and Department of Homeland Security regarding the incident.
