‘How should Jesus-followers respond’
S
eriously?! I have used that word so often in my life that I apparently passed it along to my son and even my grandsons! I use that phrase when I experience, see, or hear something so outlandish that it defies common sense, morality, or decency. I have most recently applied it to the unbelievable events taking place in our nation — political battles, riots, discrimination for any reason, devaluing of human life (born and unborn), and the list could go on.
In amazement, I have watched our nation become less like the “United States” and more like the “Divided States.”
But the kind of evil we are experiencing is not limited by any geographical borders. It even extends well beyond our current laws which can be — and I believe soon will be — abolished by the simple stroke of a pen or pounding
of a gavel.
So, how should Jesus-followers respond to the current events beyond saying, “seriously?” As always should be the case, we must see what God’s word says, “Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” (Ephesians 5:1-2)
“Follow God’s example,” He brings sunshine and rain on even the unjust (Matt. 5:45). “Walk in the way of love,” Like Christ, we are to be “speaking the truth in love” which means we must seek the absolute best for anyone to or about whom we are speaking.
As Bob Goff’s book title states regarding Biblical love, “Everybody, Always.”
While we are to stand firmly against all evil, do not confuse “tough love” with “being-a-jerk love” or you may hear your Heavenly Father say, “Seriously!” Ephesians 4:26 says, “In your anger do not sin …”
So, does God “seriously” expect us to “walk in the way of love” with all the evil events going on in our nation right now? Yes. He. Does. Seriously!
