CHEYENNE — Junior Gabe Hoover brought home a state championship for the Newcastle Dogies at the 3A State Swimming and Diving Championships on Feb. 20-21 in Cheyenne.

Hoover won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:02.19, dropping nearly a second from his prelim time after entering finals as the top seed. He led from the opening leg to secure the title.

“Gabe has held the fastest time in the state in this event for most of the year,” head coach Doug Scribner said. “That was such a great race for him. He led the entire race right from the start.”

Hoover also placed fourth in the 100-yard backstroke with a 55.66.

Newcastle’s 200-yard medley relay team of John Sandrini, Archer Ohnstad, Nathan Smith and Isaiah Anderson placed ninth after moving up from their seed in prelims and dropping time in finals.

In the 400-yard freestyle relay, Ohnstad, Sandrini, Hoover and Anderson finished 11th with a season-best 3:52.81, achieving the team’s goal of breaking four minutes.

Ohnstad competed in the 50-yard freestyle, and Sandrini swam the 100-yard backstroke.

Newcastle finished 11th in the team standings with 39 points.
