A clear look at Hebrews 5:14 by reading the verse backwards. This study shows how maturity, practice, and trained spiritual senses lead to true discernment between good and evil.

“But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil.” Hebrews 5:14

When this verse is taken apart from the end and worked backward, the message becomes even clearer.

1. “Discern good and evil.”
This is the goal. God wants His people to know what is right and what is wrong. Not by feelings, not by culture, not by popular opinion. By truth. Discernment is a sign of spiritual adulthood.

“Do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God.” 1 John 4:1

2. “Have their senses trained.”
That kind of discernment doesn’t happen by accident. It takes training. Your spiritual senses learn to recognize truth and error the same way your physical senses learn anything — through repetition and exposure.

“Your word I have treasured in my heart, that I may not sin against You.” Psalm 119:11

3. “Because of practice.”
Practice means doing what God says. Putting His Word into action. Testing choices, actions, and attitudes by Scripture again and again. Faith grows when it is used.

“But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves.” James 1:22

4. “Solid food is for the mature.”
This is where the verse starts, but it’s the ending of the process. God gives deeper understanding to believers who walk faithfully in what they already know. Maturity is not measured by Bible knowledge alone. It shows up in obedience.

“Everyone who partakes only of milk is not accustomed to the word of righteousness, for he is an infant.” Hebrews 5:13

When you reverse the whole verse, it says something like this:

If you want discernment, your senses must be trained.
If you want trained senses, you must practice God’s Word.
If you practice God’s Word, you grow into maturity.
And only the mature are ready for the solid, deeper truths God gives.

Spiritual growth is not complicated. It’s steady obedience. It’s staying in the Word. It’s letting truth shape your decisions. And the more you walk in it, the clearer everything becomes.
