WHEATLAND (WNE) — East Fairview Road, from Highway 320 to Front Road, was closed this weekend while fire crews put out a fire on a semi-truck load full of hay.

On Friday, an emergency call reported a truck full of hay on fire, with the trailer fully involved, according to Wheatland Volunteer Fire Department chief Bob Glasson.

With assistance from area fire districts and local agencies and farmers, the burning hay was removed from the trailer and the fire fully contained by 9:30 p.m.

Crews stayed on the scene through Saturday to flood the remaining hay to ensure the fire was completely out.

“It’s hard to extinguish a hay fire,” Glasson said. “We pushed it into the ditch and put a whole lot of water on top. It took just shy of 40,000 gallons.”

Glasson said the cause of the fire is unknown, but it appeared the hay must have been baled green and spontaneously combusted.
