FEDERAL WAY, Wash. (3/18/25) – Freshman swimmer Macey Hansen is ready to kick off her NCAA Swimming and Diving Championship campaign in Federal Way, Washington this week, which is set to be streamed on ESPN+. Hansen is the first swimmer from UW to qualify for and compete at NCAAs since 2017, and the first-ever during Dave Denniston’s tenure as Wyoming head coach.
Hansen is set to compete in the 500-yard freestyle prelims on Thursday at 11 am. and should she advance, the finals will begin at 7 p.m. She will then swim the 1650-yard freestyle prelims on Saturday at 4:45 p.m. with finals beginning at 7 p.m.
“Macey has been preparing like this is her 4th NCAA Championship, not her first,” Denniston said. “She’s been consistent at practice and pacing and the excitement has been building for this meet. We don’t have any real expectations but knowing Macey we are looking for surprises she has hidden up her sleeve!”
During the 2025 Mountain West Conference Championships, Hansen shattered the school records in both the 500 and 1650-yard freestyle. She owns the records of a 4:41.56 in the 500-yard freestyle and a 16:07.75 in the 1650-yard freestyle. While she accomplished those feats as just a freshman, it was her senior teammate Maisyn Klimczak whose records she broke. After Hansen broke those records, it was Klimczak who was first to embrace and congratulate her, telling Hansen she wanted her to break those records.
With two MW titles and two school records to her name, Hansen is set to make program history again at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championship. However, this is only the beginning of what is destined to be a promising career as a Cowgirl for Hansen.
