When Mayor Pam Gualtieri was officially sworn in on Jan. 4 she vacated her Newcastle City Council seat, resulting in a vacancy. The council is currently soliciting letters through Jan. 22 from those wishing to serve on the council.
“The mayor and council decided to advertise to solicit letters of interest to serve on the council,” Clerk-Treasurer Greg James said in an email. “After those are reviewed, they will make a decision as to whom to appoint to fill Pam’s vacant seat. There are no state statutes or local ordinances directing this process — it is entirely up to the council how to approach it.”
The person selected by the council to fill the seat would do so for the next two years, the remainder of Gualtieri’s elected term on the council.
