GLENN L. CALLANDER

Glenn L. Callander passed away Saturday, Feb. 16, 2019, at his rural home in Hayes County, Neb. He was 92 years old.
Glenn was born on Nov. 18, 1926, to Archibald and Bertha (Kasten) Callander at McCook, Neb. He attended Evergreen County School and Curtis AG High School. At the age of 16, he became a charter member of Evergreen Union Church and was a lifelong member. He was baptized on Aug. 1, 1941, at Camp Hayes.
Glenn was inducted into the U.S. Army on March 9, 1945, at the age of 18. He attended Basic Training at Camp Maxi, Texas, and schooled at Fort Warren, Wyo. He served in the Philippines while in the service. He was honorably discharged on Dec. 11, 1946.
On May 22, 1949, he married Dorothy Patterson and to this union four sons were born, Grant, Archie, Fred, and Calvin. On May 29, 1983, he married Dawn Anderson. Glenn spent most of his life in Hayes County ranching, custom haying, and driving school bus. He was owner and operator of a mechanic’s shop for years and also worked for the county. Glenn was caretaker of Hayes Center Cemetery and opened graves in all the area country cemeteries from 1977 to 2007.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Archibald and Bertha Callander; son, Grant Callander; step-daughters, Paula Shane and Vicky Anderson; grandson, Ian Shane; great-grandson, Evan Anderson; and brother, Claire Callander.
He is survived by his wife, Dawn Callander of McCook; three sons, Archie (Sharon) Callander of Newcastle, Wyo., Fred (Carla) Callander of Bartley, Calvin (Teri) Callander of Hendley, Neb.; step-children, Dan Anderson of Hayes Center, Neb., and Ann (Brad) Kirkpatrick of Aurora, Ill.; 13 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in his name to the Hayes Center Cemetery.
Visitation will be Thursday, Feb. 21, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Herrmann Jones Funeral Chapel in McCook. The family will be present from 5 to 7 p.m. to greet friends.
Funeral service will be Friday, Feb. 22, 11 a.m. at Herrmann Jones Funeral Chapel, with Johnny Walker and Jim Howard officiating. Burial will be in the Hayes Center Cemetery at 3 p.m.
