Getting Right or Being Made Right?
Many say âget right with God,â but Scripture says weâre made right by Him through faith, surrender, and obedience.
People say, âYou need to get right with God.â Itâs a phrase tossed around so often that few stop to think what it really means. To most, it sounds like cleaning up your act, quitting bad habits, or doing a few good deeds to even the scales. But thatâs not how anyone gets right with God.
When someone says they need to âget right,â what they really feel is the pull of conviction. Their heart knows somethingâs off. They sense that gap between themselves and God, but they donât know how to cross it. That desire to âget rightâ is actually God already at work, drawing them in. Jesus said, âNo one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him.â (John 6:44)
The trouble comes when people try to fix that distance by themselves. They think righteousness can be earned. Paul wrote, âFor not knowing about Godâs righteousness and seeking to establish their own, they did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God.â (Romans 10:3) Trying to âget rightâ on your own only leads to frustration, because sin canât clean up sin.
The truth is, righteousness isnât something you achieveâitâs something you receive. Scripture says, âTherefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.â (Romans 5:1)
You donât âget rightâ with God. Youâre made right by God. The work was done at the cross. All thatâs left is to believe, surrender, and obeyâletting His grace do what your effort never could.
