Getting Right or Being Made Right?

Many say “get right with God,” but Scripture says we’re made right by Him through faith, surrender, and obedience.

People say, “You need to get right with God.” It’s a phrase tossed around so often that few stop to think what it really means. To most, it sounds like cleaning up your act, quitting bad habits, or doing a few good deeds to even the scales. But that’s not how anyone gets right with God.

When someone says they need to “get right,” what they really feel is the pull of conviction. Their heart knows something’s off. They sense that gap between themselves and God, but they don’t know how to cross it. That desire to “get right” is actually God already at work, drawing them in. Jesus said, “No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him.” (John 6:44)

The trouble comes when people try to fix that distance by themselves. They think righteousness can be earned. Paul wrote, “For not knowing about God’s righteousness and seeking to establish their own, they did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God.” (Romans 10:3) Trying to “get right” on your own only leads to frustration, because sin can’t clean up sin.

The truth is, righteousness isn’t something you achieve—it’s something you receive. Scripture says, “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Romans 5:1)

You don’t ‘get right’ with God. You’re made right by God. The work was done at the cross. All that’s left is to believe, surrender, and obey—letting His grace do what your effort never could.
