Follow Your Heart?

The world says “follow your heart,” but Jesus says, “Follow Me.” Learn why trusting your heart can lead you wrong—and why following Christ is the only way to real life.

“Just follow your heart.” Sounds sweet, doesn’t it? Like your heart will never steer you wrong. It shows up in movies, songs, and advice from friends who mean well. But if we’re being honest, that’s some of the worst advice out there.

The Bible doesn’t say follow your heart. It warns us about it.

“The heart is more deceitful than all else, and is desperately sick; who can understand it?” (Jeremiah 17:9)

That’s not something I want to follow. The truth is, our hearts are tied up in emotions, flesh, pride, and past wounds. One minute, we want one thing. The next minute, we’re chasing something else. If we follow that around, we’ll end up lost.

The world tells us to chase what feels good. But feelings are not facts. Feelings change. Truth doesn’t. That’s why God gave us His Word—to guide us. And He gave us His Spirit—to lead us.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding” (Proverbs 3:5)

We’re not called to follow our hearts. We’re called to follow Jesus.
“If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me” (John 12:26).

Sometimes your heart will tell you to walk away when God is calling you to stay. Sometimes your heart says, “You deserve this,” when God is saying, “Deny yourself and take up your cross.”

The Bible never says, “Follow your heart.” But it does say this: “Watch over your heart with all diligence, for from it flow the springs of life” (Proverbs 4:23)

We don’t follow our hearts—we lead them. We guard them. We surrender them to the Lord.

If you’ve been following your heart and it’s led you nowhere but regret, maybe it’s time to stop and ask: Am I following Christ, or just chasing what I want?

He won’t lead you in circles. He won’t lead you into ruin. He’ll lead you in truth. That’s a path worth following.
