ROCK SPRINGS (WNE) — The Wyoming Highway Patrol is investigating a deadly crash Friday involving multiple commercial and passenger vehicles on Interstate 80, between Exit 90 and Exit 91.
According to the Wyoming Department of Transportation, all lanes were blocked between Rock Springs and Green River on I-80 at mile marker 90 due to a deadly crash in the tunnel.
All westbound traffic was diverted to Exit 91, and all eastbound traffic was diverted to Exit 89.
Stephanie Harsha, District 3 public relations specialist for WYDOT, said that as of 1:10 p.m., the westbound lane had been closed for investigatory purposes. Harsha said the infrastructure of the tunnels will be investigated before reopening them.
“Everyone’s on call right now,” Harsha said. “As of right now, I don’t have an opening estimate at all. We have to wait until the investigation is completed.”
She added that the concern for WYDOT is that the entirety of the infrastructure is functioning.
The number of fatalities was unknown at press time.
Harsha was reminding motorists to avoid the area, as several first responders from various agencies were on the scene.
By 2:02 p.m., Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County sent a message out regarding the mass casualty incident. The hospital advised the community it is working to provide care for those who were involved.
“If you and your immediate family are not involved, please refrain from visiting the hospital unless it is an emergency,” the press release stated.
