Evansville mayor resigns
CASPER (WNE) — Evansville Mayor Candace Machado announced her immediate resignation on Friday, citing a broken political system and pressure to maintain the status quo.
“If you don’t ‘fall in line’ then you will be quietly silenced or ignored,” Machado wrote in her announcement posted on Facebook.
Some residents of the town called for Machado’s resignation last summer after miniature pride flags donated by Visit Casper were Machado placed on the lawn of the Evansville Municipal Building. The calls were led by an Evansville man who drew chalk swastikas on the sidewalk in protest of the display.
At a town council meeting in June, Councilman Greg Flesvig also said Machado should resign. Machado remained adamant that she would not step down as mayor.
“I will not support or be a part of a system that fosters silence, discrimination, sexism, religious preference, racism, bigotry, harassment, adult bullying, staff lies, stalking, lying, manipulation, or elected officials behaving inappropriately behind the scenes,” Machado wrote.
Machado said she stands by every choice she made in her year as mayor and five years total on the Evansville Town Council.
“The best thing I can do is leave a position that no longer serves me,” she wrote.
