Eternal Life: Now I Have It, What Do I Do? A Guide to Living in Christ
Eternal life isn’t just something waiting for you down the road. The moment you put your trust in Jesus Christ, it becomes a reality. It changes who you belong to. It changes how you live. And sooner or later, every new believer asks the same question: “Now that I have it… what do I do?”
Jesus answered that better than anyone. “This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” (John 17:3) Eternal life starts with knowing Him. Not just knowing about Him. Knowing Him. Walking with Him. Learning His voice in a world full of noise.
The first thing that happens after you’re saved is this simple truth: you don’t belong to yourself anymore. Paul wrote, “Present your bodies as a living and holy sacrifice… And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” (Romans 12:1–2) Your life becomes an offering. Your mind is changed by His Word. And little by little, He shapes the way you think, speak, and act.
Eternal life also grows. Relationships always do. You grow by staying in the Word, by talking with the Lord, by gathering with believers who will help you along. Peter said, “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” (2 Peter 3:18) You don’t grow by accident. You grow by drawing near.
One thing becomes clear fast: what God gives you, He expects you to share. Jesus didn’t save anyone to sit quietly in a corner. He said, “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations…” (Matthew 28:19–20) You don’t have to be a preacher. You don’t need a stage. You just tell people what Christ did for you and what He can do for them. That’s how the gospel spreads. One honest story at a time.
And while you’re walking this new life out, God begins to show you why He saved you in the first place. Not just to take you to Heaven, but to use you right now. He told His people long ago, “For I know the plans that I have for you… plans for welfare and not for calamity, to give you a future and a hope.” (Jeremiah 29:11) His plans didn’t stop when you got saved. They started.
Along the way, you’ll find something else: hope. Real hope. The kind this world can’t steal. Paul prayed, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” (Romans 15:13) Eternal life settles your future so you can live today without fear hanging over your head.
So what do you do now that you have eternal life?
You walk with the One who gave it.
You grow.
You obey.
You share.
You trust Him with the steps you don’t see yet.
If you’re new in the faith and trying to figure out how to live this out, find a Bible-believing church. Get around believers who love the Word. Open your Bible. Pray. Ask questions. And let the Lord guide you one day at a time.
