Douglas “Doug” Raymond McCoy passed away on Feb. 23, 2020, at Weston County Manor. 
He was born in his grandparents’ log home north of Newcastle, Wyo., to Raymond and Iona (Procunier) McCoy, on March 25, 1934.
He was a 1952 graduate from Newcastle High School, where he earned numerous “N” letters in sports; his senior year he was the captain of the football, basketball and track squads.
Doug joined the Wyoming National Guard in April
1948, having just turned 14 in March. He served in the Guard, being discharged in 1950 with the rank of corporal.
After graduating, he served in the U.S. Navy for 20 years, retiring in November 1970. He retired with the rank of senior chief hospital corpsman. While in the Navy he served as a medic with the U.S. Marine Corps for half of his career, including service with the 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, FMF in Vietnam, from August 1966 thru August 1967. After his retirement he earned a degree (with honors) in education, from Palomar College, San Marcos, Calif. He worked at an automobile parts house until 1994. Doug was placed on VA total disability in 1994 as a result of duty in Vietnam.
He married Nancy A Spicer, on
Dec. 25, 1954, at Bremerton, Wash. Sons Dale and James were born to this union; the marriage ended in divorce in 1969. He married Mary E. Fosso on Nov. 22, 1970; the marriage ended in divorce in 1999.
Doug returned to his home in Newcastle in 1975, building his
home on his grandparents’ homestead north of Newcastle.
He belonged to the following: Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Weston County Genealogy Society, Weston County Humane Society,
U.S. Navy Fleet Reserve, The Retired Enlisted Association Black Hills Volksmarch Association.
Doug got into rock climbing when he was 60 and continued until a falling accident in 1998. The highlight was climbing Devils Tower when he was 62 and 63 years old.
Survivors include his sons, Dale and James; wife, Nicole of California; brother, Wilbur Lease of Newcastle; grandsons, James and Shawn McCoy of California; stepson, Mark Sylva and wife Moreen; step-grandkids, Taylor and Jason Sylva of Idaho and Joleen, Collin and Clarise McCoy of California.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents; parents, Raymond and Iona; stepfather, Maurice Lease;
twin brothers, Ray and Roy McCoy; sister, Juanita Smith; and his first and second wives.
At his request, there will be no services. Cremation has taken place and the remains will be buried at a later date in the Boyd, Wyo., cemetery.
A memorial has been established in Doug’s name to the Weston County Humane Society. Contributions may be sent to Box 744 Newcastle, WY 82701.
