Dogies open state tournament in Casper
The Newcastle Dogies opened competition Friday at the Wyoming High School Activities Association 3A State Wrestling Championships in Casper, with six wrestlers taking the mat at the Ford Wyoming Center.
According to Friday’s tournament listings, Asic Dawson (106), Micheal Coombs (113), Troy Christensen (138), TJ Harrington (150), Dane Crabtree (165) and Noah Williams Gardner (190) were all in action on the tournament’s opening day.
Coach Teigen Marchant reported that five of the six Dogies dropped their first-round matches. Christensen was the lone bright spot early, earning a win in his opening bout at 138 pounds before falling in his second match of the day.
With first-round losses, Dawson, Coombs, Harrington, Crabtree and Gardner were pushed into the consolation side of the bracket as they fought to stay alive in the two-day tournament.
The 3A state tournament continues Saturday with consolation semifinals, placement matches and championship finals.
