The Newcastle Dogies track and field team continued to show steady improvement over a busy week of competition, highlighted by strong performances and numerous personal records at the Queen City Classic and the Mick Tonkel Fly High Classic.
At the Queen City Classic on April 10 in Spearfish, South Dakota, Dane Crabtree led the way for Newcastle by qualifying in the long jump with a mark of 20 feet, 8.5 inches. Adalyn Olson also turned in a standout performance, finishing second in the hurdles.
The Dogiesβ boys 4x100-meter relay team of Collin McConkey, Jaden McGuire, Crabtree and Rurik Herberg came close to a qualifying time, continuing to improve as the season progresses.
Head coach Matt Conzelman said the meet was a positive step forward for the team.
βWe had a lot of personal records on the day,β Conzelman said.
Newcastle also competed at the Mick Tonkel Fly High Classic, where the Lady Dogies finished sixth overall with 24 points in a field of eight teams. Several athletes contributed to the team score, including a runner-up finish in the 4x100-meter relay and a second-place finish in the pole vault by Madalyn Francis.
On the boys side, the Dogies captured a first-place finish in the 4x100-meter relay and added strong marks in the field events, particularly in the pole vault and throws.
The team will return to action Thursday at the Devils Tower Track Classic in Hulett. Field events are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., followed by the medley relay at 10:15 a.m. and running events at 11:30 a.m.
Newcastle will then host the Newcastle Twilight Meet on Friday, April 24, which will also serve as Senior Night for the Dogies track and field program.
