The Newcastle High School track and field team turned in a productive week with strong showings at the Basin Nation Invitational and the Wyoming Track Classic, highlighted by personal records, a state qualification and multiple podium finishes.
Head coach Matt Conzelman praised his team’s effort and progress as the regular season winds down.
“At the Basin Nation Invitational, our Dogies achieved five season-best marks,” Conzelman said. “Congratulations to Simon Bau for qualifying for state in the pole vault with a 12-foot jump.”
Bau’s vault not only earned him third place at the meet, but also punched his ticket to the 3A state championships later this month.
The Dogies also saw standout performances from several athletes on the girls side. Adalyn Olson captured first place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.78 seconds, while Madalyn Francis won the pole vault by clearing 9 feet.
“Shout out to Madalyn Francis for winning the pole vault and to Adalyn Olson for winning the 100,” Conzelman said.
The girls 4x100-meter relay team added a third-place finish with a time of 55.68 seconds, and Sydney Pederson placed fourth in the shot put with a throw of 32 feet, 5.25 inches.
On the boys side, the 4x100 relay team claimed second place in 46.31 seconds. Collin McConkey and Landen Hill both placed in the top five of the 200-meter dash, finishing fourth and fifth, respectively, while Dustin McCarthy earned third in the high jump by clearing 5-11.
The Dogies also made their presence felt in the field events, with Cole Erb finishing fourth in the triple jump and Dane Crabtree taking sixth in the long jump.
Following Basin Nation, Olson represented Newcastle at the Wyoming Track Classic, an elite meet featuring top athletes from all classifications across the state.
“We were very proud of Adalyn Olson for representing Newcastle High School at the Wyoming Track Classic,” Conzelman said.
Olson placed third in the long jump with a leap of 17-2 and finished eighth in the 100-meter hurdles against some of the state’s best competition.
With the postseason approaching, Conzelman said the team is focused on continued improvement.
“We’re excited to see our athletes continue chasing new personal records this week,” he said.
The Dogies will wrap up the regular season Friday at the Bulldog Invite in Sundance before heading to the 3A East Regional meet in Glenrock on May 15-16. The state championships are scheduled for May 21-23 in Casper.
