The Newcastle High School track and field team delivered a standout performance on its home track Tuesday, highlighted by a team championship for the boys and a third-place finish for the girls at the revived Speed Goat Classic.

Originally scheduled for Friday, the meet was moved earlier in the week due to projected weather, but the adjustment did little to slow the Dogies as they capitalized on competing in Newcastle.

Head coach Matt Conzelman said the meet’s name reflects a return to tradition.

“We moved the meet from Friday to Tuesday because of the weather projection, and we brought back the Speed Goat name,” Conzelman said. “A number of years ago we called it the Speed Goat, but we haven’t used that name since before 2020.”

The Dogie boys claimed the team title with 190.5 points, finishing ahead of Wright, Sundance and Hulett. The girls placed third with 130.5 points in a competitive field led by Wright.

Newcastle athletes delivered across the board, with several earning state-qualifying marks. Dane Crabtree qualified in the 100 meters, while Collin McConkey, Jaden McGuire and Landen Hill punched their tickets to state in the 200 meters.

The Dogies piled up event wins in both running and field events.

On the girls side, Adalyn Olson led the way with a victory in the 300-meter hurdles and also won the long jump with a leap of 16-9.5. Teammate Anika Oleson added a win in the triple jump and finished second in the long jump, while Hana Alexander placed third in the long jump.

The girls 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relay teams also claimed first-place finishes.

In the sprints, Courtney Matthews paced the Dogies with a fifth-place finish in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes.

On the boys side, Newcastle dominated the 200 meters, sweeping the top three spots as McConkey, McGuire and Hill finished first, second and third.

McConkey also took second in the 100 meters, while Crabtree, McGuire and Rurik Herrberg all placed in the top six.

Adam Butler had a standout day in the hurdles, winning both the 110- and 300-meter events, while Dustin McCarthy added a runner-up finish in the 110 hurdles.

In distance events, Archer Ohnstad won the 800-meter run and placed fifth in the 400, while Lane Carter finished third in the 3200 and fourth in the 1600.

The Dogies also swept the relays they entered, with both the boys 4x100 and 4x400 teams finishing first.

Field events added key points to the boys team total. Landen Hill and Dustin McCarthy tied for first in the high jump, Simon Bau placed second in the pole vault, and Crabtree took second in the long jump.

Cole Erb added a runner-up finish in the triple jump, while Connor Kitch placed third in the discus and fifth in the shot put.

In addition to the wins, Newcastle athletes recorded numerous personal bests throughout the meet. Simon Bau cleared 11 feet in the pole vault, Adalyn Olson improved her mark in the 300 hurdles, and Anika Oleson recorded a season personal record in the triple jump. Both girls relay teams and the boys 4x400 relay team also posted season-best times.

On Thursday, April 30, the Dogies will travel to the Basin Nation Invitational Track Meet in Gillette.
