Dogies battle at Douglas regional

DOUGLAS — The Newcastle Lady Dogies put themselves in position for a strong finish at the 3A East Regional Girls Wrestling Tournament in Douglas on Friday, sitting in 11th place out of 46 teams with 40.5 points heading into Saturday’s final rounds.

Coach Halle McCoy said she was pleased with the way her team handled the opening day of competition.

“Today’s action has been good, lots of fierce competition,” McCoy said. “But the girls have been preparing for this all season. They showed up to do big things.”

Several Dogies battled through early rounds Friday, with multiple wrestlers advancing before unofficial results were gathered.

At 120 pounds, Aby Tacy received a first-round bye before dropping her next two matches to end her tournament. Tealah Stevenson, also at 120, earned a bye in the opening round, won her second match and dropped her third. She was still alive in consolation action when results were reported.

Courtney Matthews (125) opened with a bye, picked up a win in her second match and fell in the third round. Savannah Lorenz (130) received a first-round bye but lost her next two matches and was eliminated.

Netanya Prell (135) also started with a bye, won her second match and lost her third to move into the consolation side of the bracket.

At 140, Brylee Castner dropped her opening match and had not yet wrestled her second bout when unofficial results were reported.

Natalie Dean (170) earned a win in her first match and was awaiting her next opponent as of Friday afternoon.

At 235, Lalla Lopez had not yet wrestled when early results were compiled.

All results from Friday’s competition were unofficial at the time of reporting. Final placings and state qualifiers will be determined Saturday as the tournament concludes in Douglas.

The top finishers in each weight class will advance to next week’s 3A state championships in Casper.
