Desperate times call for desperate measures
The U.S. government has a spending problem. That’s nothing new. But our current president doesn’t seem too concerned about it, unfortunately.
This week, President Donald Trump announced a proposal to send $5,000 checks to every American adult if Republicans secure control of both the House and Senate in the upcoming November midterm elections.
How nice of him. Every American adult. Not every Republican adult, but every American one, no matter how they vote.
Sounds like a bribe to me. Merriam-Webster defines a bribe as “Money or favor given or promised in order to influence the judgment or conduct of a person in a position of trust.”
There’s a saying out there about something that walks, talks and acts like a duck. It escapes me at the moment, but I feel like it would apply in this situation.
Things must not be looking too good if Trump is having to stoop to government handouts, even if he has no intention of following through on this promise if the Republicans pull through.
So where is this money coming from? According to the president, it will come from tariff revenue. Apparently we got $21 trillion from these tariffs. If that’s the case, why not apply some of it to the national debt?
But when you’re $40 trillion in debt, what’s another $1.2 trillion?
This announcement comes at an interesting time. Earlier this month, the U.S. House of Representatives adopted a resolution condemning socialism in all its forms.
Is this socialism? It’s been a hot minute since I’ve been in college, but the government handing out checks to people for not doing any work sounds like socialism to me. At least, that’s what Fox News tells me.
If Joe Biden had done this, Republicans would be all over him, claiming he’s being socialist. Let’s see if they do that in this situation.
The reason Republicans are worried about the midterms is not because of the Democrats.
Things have been getting expensive for years, but it seems like they’ve really ramped up in the last couple of years.
It wasn’t radical leftists who imposed a bunch of tariffs or got us into a war with Iran, and surprisingly it wasn’t the Democratic Socialists of America who proposed $5,000 in government handouts to every American adult.
We’re all trying to find the guy who did this.
But the thing about problems is they provide an opportunity for a solution.
Luckily, the government is here to help.
