DOUGLAS (WNE) — Converse County deputies found a woman slumped over the steering wheel in a stolen red Chrysler Pacifica in the middle of the road just outside Douglas, according to court documents.

Kristina Van Vleet, born in 1982, allegedly told deputies she was driving from Casper to Lander.

Deputies said there was an overwhelming aroma of alcohol in the van, according to the Converse County Sheriff’s Office affidavit. They also reported observing inebriated behavior from Van Vleet when she exited the van.

Van Vleet failed the field sobriety test and BRaC breath test.

The owner of the van, who lives in Riverton, reported it stolen the previous day, and Van Vleet was allegedly driving with a suspended Wyoming driver’s license, CCSO deputies said.

She is charged with knowingly taking another’s property with a value more than $1,000. If convicted, she faces up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

She is additionally charged with driving under the influence. Her prior convictions allowed prosecutors to charge her with enhanced penalties, so she faces up to seven years in prison and a $10,000 fine for the DUI charge.

Van Vleet is pleading not guilty by reason of mental illness. She has three prior DUI convictions from Park County and one from Fremont County.
