Depression is real
Depression is real, but it does not get the final word. This devotional points hurting hearts back to God’s nearness, care, and truth.
It is not just a bad day or a passing mood. It can settle in and stay, draining the strength out of a man, taking the joy out of things that once mattered, and making even the simplest parts of life feel heavy. Many carry it quietly. They go about their day, do what needs to be done, and say very little about what is going on inside.
God’s Word does not ignore that kind of struggle. “Why are you in despair, O my soul? And why have you become disturbed within me? Hope in God…” (Psalm 42:5). That is a man speaking to his own soul because what he feels and what is true are not lining up. Depression will speak loudly and constantly. It will tell a man he is stuck, that nothing will change, and that there is no way forward. Those thoughts feel real, but they are not the final authority.
Scripture answers back. “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:18). Not distant. Not unaware. Near. “Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7). Not part of it, not what seems manageable, but all of it. That does not mean the weight lifts overnight or that the struggle disappears in a moment, but it does mean a man is not carrying it alone.
Depression may be real, but it does not get the final word. God does. And He has not stepped away.
