Dentist, Endodontist, Orthodontist: What's the Difference?

Dentist, endodontist, orthodontist. What's the difference? They're all doctors that deal with teeth, right? Does it matter which one you see for your dental needs?

While it's true all three of these professionals specialize in oral health, they perform different types of work on teeth. You'll likely see all of them at some point in your life, but at different times for different issues. To help you better understand which one to turn to the next time you're dealing with a toothache or a crooked smile, here's what each professional does.

What's a Dentist?

A general dentist is your main provider for oral health. They diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions that affect your teeth, gums, and mouth. You should see your dentist at least once a year for a routine check-up and cleaning.

Some common procedures they handle include:

  • Dental exams and cleanings: They check for cavities and remove plaque and tartar buildup.
  • Fillings: They repair cavities by filling holes in your teeth.
  • Crowns and bridges: They place caps over damaged teeth or replace missing teeth.
  • Extractions: They remove teeth that are severely damaged or decayed.

What's an Endodontist?

Endodontists are specialists who focus on the tooth's pulp, which is the soft tissue inside your teeth. They have advanced training to handle complex tooth problems that involve the pulp and roots.

A few treatments an endodontist performs are:

  • Root canal therapy: They treat infected or inflamed tooth pulp to save the tooth.
  • Endodontic surgery: They perform procedures like an apicoectomy, which removes the tip of a tooth's root.
  • Traumatic dental injuries: They treat cracked or dislodged teeth caused by accidents.

Because many of these are procedures with a higher risk of complications, most endodontists also offer retreatment services; which are, to summarize, treatments that help fix failed root canals or crowns.

What's an Orthodontist?

Orthodontists specialize in correcting misaligned teeth and jaws. They focus on improving your bite and smile alignment. If you have crowded teeth or an overbite, an orthodontist is the specialist you need to see.

Orthodontists offer services like:

  • Braces: They use metal or ceramic brackets to straighten teeth over time.
  • Clear aligners: They provide a series of custom-made plastic trays to shift teeth into place.
  • Retainers: They create devices to hold teeth in their new positions after treatment.

So, what's the difference between dentists, endodontists, and orthodontists? Primarily the type of dental work they specialize in. You'll want to go to your dentist for regular care, an endodontist for pulp-related issues, and an orthodontist for teeth straightening. Understanding their distinct roles helps you get the right care when you need it.
