Finale of the Rumble in the Rockies
LARAMIE, Wyo. (Aug. 31, 2025) – The Wyoming Cowgirl volleyball team suffered its first setback of the 2025 season Sunday in the finale of the Rumble in the Rockies. The Cowgirls were bested by Colorado in three sets, 25-20, 25-13 and 25-22.
The two teams battled in the first set, as Wyoming (2-1) took an early lead. The first set featured eight ties and five lead changes before Colorado took control late in the frame to come away with an early match lead. After controlling the second set, CU looked well on its way to doing the same in the third set. However, the Cowgirls showed resiliency and fight, going on a 4-0 run to make the score 23-22 in favor of the Buffs. From there though, Colorado would win an exciting point to make it 24-22 and closed things out with a kill on the next point.
The Buffaloes hit .289 in the contest while holding the Cowgirls to just a .138 efficiency. Colorado also dominated the net on defense, registering 16 team blocks to Wyoming’s seven. CU also had a trio of service aces and committed just four serving errors. The Cowgirls, meanwhile, had five errors and failed to record an ace.
Paige Lauterwasser led the Cowgirls with her first double-double of the season, as she had a team-high 11 kills and 14 digs while hitting .286. Sarah Holcomb chipped in with nine kills and led UW with three total blocks in the loss. Skylar Erickson and Lily LaFlesch each notched 12 digs in the back row.
Evelyn Udezue saw her first action of the season Sunday. Udezue came off the bench to provide a spark with five kills and two blocks while hitting .400. Addy Cook, Lauterwasser and Jordan Sandy also had two blocks along with Udezue.
Next up, the Cowgirls will hit the road for the first time this season as they travel to Brookings, South Dakota for the South Dakota State Invitational. Wyoming faces Ole Miss Saturday at noon Mountain Time and the host Jackrabbits at 11 a.m., Sunday.
