Cowgirls Outlast Rams to Open Mountain West Tennis Championship

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (April 23, 2025) – The Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team opened play the Mountain West Championships with a thrilling 4-3 victory over Border Rival Colorado State in the opening round. With the win, the Cowgirls extend their streak dating back to 2008 of advancing to at least the Quarterfinal Round at the championship in every tournament.
The Cowgirls opened the match by taking the Doubles Point against the Rams. Wyoming got wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to earn the point. At No. 1, the All-Mountain West Doubles Team of Violetta Borodina and Dilnaz Mashabayeva won 6-2 while No. 3, the tandem of Serina Abriola and Ruby Young also won by a score of 6-2.
In singles, Borodina, who was also named to the All-Mountain West Singles Team Tuesday, clinched the win for Wyoming as she broke a 3-3 tie behind the strength of a monster 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 win at the No. 2 position. The Cowgirls also got straight-set victories in singles from Mashabayeva at No. 5 and Abriola at No. 6, to showcase the depth of the UW lineup. Mashabayeva won 7-6 (7-5) and 7-5 for a hard-fought victory. Abriola, meanwhile, won 7-5 in the first set and cruised to a 6-0 victory in the second set to clinch a win.
Wyoming moves on to face top-seeded San Diego State at 11 a.m., Mountain Time Thursday. SDSU defeated the Cowgirls 4-2 in Laramie earlier this season.
