Three wins for UW in both doubles and singles Thursday

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (Oct. 17, 2024) – It was a rain-shortened day one, but a productive day one for the Wyoming Cowgirls at day one of the ITA Mountain Regional Thursday hosted by New Mexico State. The Cowgirls went 3-0 on the day in doubles play and got a trio of qualifying singles wins to begin the regional.

The day started with the team of Anastasiia Kochelaevskaia and Elena Trencheva defeating Colorado State, 8-5. Eugenia Ceinos and Ruby Young also picked up an 8-5 win, defeating a team from Montana. Rounding out the opening round of doubles wins was Violetta Borodina and Dilnaz Mashabayeva defeating Idaho by a score of 8-6.

In singles, Wyoming got three round of 64 wins in the qualifying bracket. Kochelaevskaia opened with a straight sets win over BYU’s Bitsy Tullis, 6-2 and 6-4. Kochelaevskaia was leading Ida Johansson of Idaho 6-3 and 4-1 in the next round, before play was called due to the rain.

Trencheva and Young also earned opening round wins Thursday in straight sets. Trencheva defeated Hiba Heni of BYU, 6-3 and 7-6 (7-4). Young, meanwhile, picked up a 6-4, 6-2 win over Weber State’s Alicia Morales.

Day two will begin with the conclusion of the qualifying rounds before the main draw begins. Borodina still awaits her first opponent in the main draw bracket. Friday will also feature the round of 32 in doubles action.
